A Sydney council has been praised for its decision to extend its yellow bin collection over the holiday period, with many calling for the scheme to be rolled out year round.
Last month, Liverpool City Council announced it was 'gifting' locals the extra collection date to assist with the increase in waste over the festive period.
People were instructed to put all three bins out on their usual collection days between December 29 and January 9.
'We know that when Christmas and other celebrations come around, along with the joy, the gifts and the good food, we find ourselves with some extra waste too,' Liverpool Mayor, Ned Mannoun, told news.com.au.
'That's why Liverpool City Council is pleased to continue the festive cheer with an additional recycling collection to make sure everything that can be recycled ends up on the nice list - not in the bin.'
The announcement garnered praise online with locals calling for the scheme to be extended after January 9.
'It should be like this all year... if you actually wanted people to recycle, that is,' one resident said.
Another commented: 'This is great for an extra yellow bin collection. Maybe next year we could get an extra red bin collection.'

Locals are now calling for the scheme to be rolled out across the year - and across NSW
Others also suggested the council should empty the green-lid garden bins weekly as standard and provide an extra red bin collection during the festive period for Christmas wrapping paper.
However, some slammed the council for suggesting they were being 'gifted' the collection.
'You're not "GIFTING" anything we bloody pay for it,' one resident said, while another said, 'Gifting????? This council is an absolute joke.'
It's understood this marked the third year that Liverpool City Council has provided an additional yellow bin recycling collection during the festive period.
Other councils , including Penrith and Shellharbour, have followed suit.
However, a Liverpool Council spokesperson said the scheme would not be extended beyond January due to costs.
Instead, residents were encouraged to ensure they are recycling correctly and use the weekly FOGO – Food Organics Garden Organics – green-lid collections.
