Barcelona in 2025: A domestic treble, Hansi Flick's ego message and Gavi uncut
Hansi Flick's side won all three domestic titles this season and have made a strong start to the new campaign too
A domestic treble, a Champions League semi-final, the thrill of watching Lamine Yamal reach new heights: it has been a pretty good 2025 for Barcelona.
The low point? A slightly rocky start to their title defence in La Liga, including a 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in October.
But then again, even that seemed to have a positive side. Madrid have spun into full crisis mode since that result, and many Barcelona fans seem at their happiest when their Clasico rivals are suffering.
Here, The Athletic’s Barcelona correspondent Laia Cervello Herrero takes a look back at the past 12 months.
What was Barcelona’s best moment of 2025?
At the parade through Barcelona to celebrate winning the Copa del Rey, Supercopa de Espana and La Liga titles, 670,000 people took to the streets.
For many of the first team’s junior members, it was their first such experience. The image of Pau Cubarsi drinking orange juice on the open-top bus perfectly captured the youthfulness of the squad.

The night before, May 15, Barca sealed the title with a 2-0 win at the home of local rivals Espanyol. After the game, Pedri, Dani Olmo and Eric Garcia used the city’s public e-bike service to go and visit Ferran Torres, who had been admitted to hospital with appendicitis.
Marc Casado, meanwhile, mingled with supporters at the Canaletes fountain, where Barca fans gather in great numbers to celebrate their titles.
What was the worst?
On the pitch, Barca’s Champions League elimination by Inter Milan. Flick’s side lost 7-6 on aggregate after two truly absorbing matches. Defeat was tough to take, but it still showed signs of real progress for the team. Reaching the last four had been unthinkable in recent seasons.
But back in March, Barcelona’s doctor Carles Minarro Garcia died at the age of 53. Minarro had only been with the first team for a year, but had quickly become a beloved colleague. He always kept a low profile, but he made big decisions. When Barca won the Copa del Rey in April, they wore shirts dedicated to his memory.
What was Barcelona’s best game of 2025?
Barca met Real Madrid four times last season and beat them every time. Of those, probably the most spectacular was the final of the Supercopa de Espana back in January.
Flick’s side won 5-2, despite playing with one player less from the 57th minute after Wojciech Szczesny was sent off. Madrid had no spirit, and Barcelona took advantage of that. They were a force to be reckoned with. They had to come from behind after Kylian Mbappe’s opener just five minutes in, but that just made it all the sweeter to be going into the break 4-1 up.
