Blues' Pius Suter suffered right ankle injury, will be re-evaluated in 4 weeks
Pius Suter was injured in Saturday's game against the Predators.
ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Blues forward Pius Suter suffered a right ankle injury Saturday against the Nashville Predators and will be re-evaluated in four weeks, the club announced Monday.
Suter left the Blues’ 3-2 win over the Predators in the third period after he was tripped by the Predators’ Michael McCarron. He returned to finish the game, but afterward, Blues coach Jim Montgomery was still concerned about the play.
“We were worried because it looked like a slew foot from where we were,” Montgomery said. “I don’t think it was intentional, but it looked like (a slew foot). A lot of times that can be a bad injury.”
Suter didn’t practice Sunday with the Blues, and the update was that he’d be receiving an MRI in the afternoon.
“Not able to practice today; too sore,” Montgomery said. “He’s going to have an MRI later this afternoon and we’ll have more information for you. Day to day, I would rule him out for (Monday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres).”
The MRI results showed the injury to the right ankle, and now Suter becomes the latest Blues forward to be out long-term with an injury.
The 29-year-old has played in 37 games this season and has 14 points (seven goals, seven assists).
“We’re going to miss him,” Montgomery said. “Just his steady influence of being in position, penalty kill, defensively … as a low center or wing, he’s always in the right spot. We haven’t had enough forwards taking ownership of being reliable, trustworthy and really good at their habits and details defensively.”
What does this mean for the Blues?
Suter has come as advertised when he signed a two-year, $8.25 million free-agent contract with the Blues last summer. He’s in the middle of the pack in scoring with seven goals while averaging 16.5 minutes of ice time and he’s been plugged in on multiple lines at wing and center. His absence for the next four weeks leaves the club without a reliable veteran.
Unfortunately for the Blues, this is not new territory. They’ve been without Jordan Kyrou, Dylan Holloway, Jimmy Snuggerud, Jake Neighbours, Nathan Walker, Alexey Toropchenko and Nick Bjugstad up front this season.
Fortunately for the Blues, they’ve gotten a few of those players back recently with Kyrou and Snuggerud returning on Saturday and they’ve found a few replacements in recent weeks.
The Blues signed Robbi Fabbri to a one-year, free-agent contract and claimed Jonatan Berggren on waivers. They also called up Otto Stenberg, a first-round pick in 2023 (No. 25), and he has fit in nicely.
There’s enough depth that for Monday’s game against the Sabres, Fabbri and Mathieu Joseph will return to the lineup and Berggren will be a healthy scratch.

The loss of Suter isn’t ideal, but the Blues could perhaps get a couple of other injured players back before he returns. On Sunday, Montgomery said Bjugstad’s return from an upper-body injury remains uncertain, but out of Bjugstad, Holloway and Walker, he’s the closest to coming back.
The Blues announced on Dec. 15 that Holloway was out with a high-ankle sprain and would be re-evaluated in six weeks, putting his return toward the end of January. On Dec. 2, the club announced that Walker was out with an upper-body injury and would be re-evaluated in eight weeks, also putting his timeline toward the end of January.
In the immediate future, it means that Stenberg has even more of a guarantee that he’ll remain in the NHL, and that Fabbri will not be placed on waivers, which might have happened if everyone were healthy.
