Doc Rivers passes George Karl for sixth place on NBA's coaching wins list
To this point in his career, Rivers has compiled a 1,176-835 record and a .585 win percentage.
With the Milwaukee Bucks’ 123-113 win over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday, head coach Doc Rivers picked up his 1,176th win as an NBA coach and passed George Karl for sixth on the all-time regular-season wins list.
The only five coaches in NBA history with more regular-season victories than Rivers are Gregg Popovich (1,390), Don Nelson (1,335), Lenny Wilkens (1,332), Jerry Sloan (1,221) and Pat Riley (1,210).
“Yeah, I had no idea. It’s nice. I don’t know who I passed, any of that,” Rivers said after being informed he passed Karl after Monday’s win. “Oh, wow. George is a hell of a coach, one of the best of all time.”

To this point in his career, Rivers has compiled a 1,176-835 record and a .585 win percentage. Those wins are split between five different teams — the Orlando Magic (171), Boston Celtics (416), Los Angeles Clippers (356), Philadelphia 76ers (154), Milwaukee Bucks (79) — across his 27 seasons as an NBA head coach. He also won an NBA championship with the Celtics in 2008.
“I’m just lucky,” Rivers said. “I’ve had great coaching. Honestly, I’ve had some of the greatest coaches as my assistant coaches, from Ty Lue to Tom Thibodeau and all the guys I have on my staff now: Darvin [Ham], Dave Joerger, Buck and all the guys.
“And I’ve had really good players. And, you know what I’ve had is really high-character players. I’ve had teams that had no stars on it that made it to the playoffs, and it’s more than just character. So, I’ve been lucky. I’ve had a lot of good guys.”
Rivers is now 79-72 (.523 win percentage) since taking over the Bucks midway through the 2023-24 season.
