Driver involved in Anthony Joshua crash that killed two people charged
Police confirmed Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the accident, has been charged.
The driver of the car involved in the crash that hospitalised British boxer Anthony Joshua and killed two members of his team has been charged by police.
Ogun State Police confirmed on Friday Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the incident, had been charged at Sagamu Magistrate Court in Nigeria.
The charges include causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and driving without a valid driver’s licence with the case now adjourned until January 20.
Joshua’s team members and close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, were killed when the vehicle they were traveling in, along with the British heavyweight, collided with a stationary truck near Lagos on Monday.
Joshua, 36, was released from hospital on Wednesday evening after spending two nights under observation. The two-time heavyweight champion remains in Nigeria and the Ogun and Lagos state said on Thursday that he had visited the funeral home where his friends were “being prepared for repatriation” after he left the hospital.
Initial findings from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicated the vehicle Joshua was travelling in is suspected to have been travelling above the legally prescribed speed limit at the time of the crash.
Joshua suffered minor injuries and did not require surgery. Kayode also escaped without serious injury.
Ghami worked as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach and has been involved with his team for over a decade. “Latz” was a longtime friend who also worked in the fitness industry.
They were all on holiday in Nigeria, where Joshua’s parents were born, and were travelling to Lagos when the accident occurred.
Joshua most recently fought Jake Paul in a fight in Miami on December 19, stopping the YouTube influencer-turned-boxer in the sixth round.
He had been widely expected to fight again in the early part of 2026 before a much-anticipated meeting with fellow Brit Tyson Fury later in the year.
