Earthquake in Japan: Magnitude 6 quake jolts East of Noda; no immediate casualties

An earthquake of magnitude 6 has jolted Japan right before the New Year at 11.26pm local time. According to USGS, the epicentre is 91 km east of Noda. The depth of the quake was recorded to be 19.3 km.There were no immediate records of casualties.Earlier, an earthquake of magnitude 3.4 also struck Leh, Ladakh, on New Year's Eve at 7.35pm IST according to the National Seismology Centre.The latest earthquake in Japan comes just weeks after a series of strong tremors struck the country earlier this month. On December 12, a magnitude 6.7 quake was recorded, with its epicentre located about 130 kilometres (81 miles) from Kuji city in Iwate prefecture on Honshu, according to the US Geological Survey.
Following the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory.Days earlier, on December 8, Japan was shaken by an even stronger earthquake measuring 7.5 in magnitude. The tremor triggered tsunami waves of up to 50 centimetres along Pacific coast communities, the JMA said. The tsunami hit the town of Urakawa in Hokkaido prefecture and the port of Mutsu Ogawara in Aomori prefecture, with reports of several people being injured.
