The X-Files, arguably one of the most influential sci-fi shows of all time, will be streaming for free in the new year. The David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson-led series is heading to Pluto TV, allowing veteran fans to revisit their favorite cases and new viewers to see what made the dynamic duo and their incredible on-screen chemistry so compelling.
Originally running from 1993 to 2002, the series follows two FBI agents — supernatural believer Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and skeptic Dana Scully (Anderson) — tasked with investigating the titular files, cases deemed unexplainable by traditional methods. It largely followed (and popularized) a "monster of the week" format, with the pair encountering everything from mutants to monsters to aliens, though in its later seasons it focused more on overarching conspiracy plots. The X-Files returned in 2016, though it received mixed reception.
All 11 seasons of The X-Files, including the two reboot seasons, will be available on-demand on Pluto TV beginning Jan. 1, 2026. The show will also have a dedicated channel, which will first air a complete linear run of the entire series. After this concludes, the channel will feature curated marathons of the show.
Not only was the series incredibly influential, with its impact being seen in everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Stranger Things, but it's also a great place to see the early work of now-prolific creators. Vince Gilligan, for example — the creator behind Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and, most recently, the hit show Pluribus — was a long-time writer on The X-Files. Viewers may also recognize several faces in the series who have now gone on to become big stars. Ryan Reynolds, Bryan Cranston, Luke Wilson, and many more make appearances over the course of the series.
With the entire series becoming available for free, there's never been a better time to get acquainted with The X-Files. Only one question remains: Do you want to believe?
