Gilchrist provides update on Damien Martyn after cricket great placed in induced coma
Former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn is in an induced coma in a Queensland hospital after being diagnosed with meningitis.
The 54-year-old, who played 67 Tests for Australia between 1992 and 2006, was admitted last week after falling ill.
Champion wicketkeeper and former Test and WA teammate Adam Gilchrist confirmed Martyn’s hospitalisation on behalf of him and his family.
Cricket sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation said Martyn is receiving treatment for meningitis, an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The infection can lead to swelling of the brain.
“Damien Martyn remains in a serious condition at the Gold Coast University Hospital,” a spokesperson for Gold Coast Health said on Wednesday.
There are hopes Martyn can be brought out of his coma in the coming days, but his condition is being closely monitored.

“He is getting the best of treatment and [Martyn’s partner] Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes,” Gilchrist said.
Martyn’s former Australian teammates Darren Lehmann and Ryan Campbell were on Wednesday among those to pay tribute to the dashing batsman, with Lehmann writing on X: “Lots of love and prayers sending @damienmartyn way. Keep strong and fighting legend. Love to the family xxx.”
Chief executive Todd Greenberg wished Martyn a quick recovery on behalf of Cricket Australia.
“I’m saddened to hear of Damien’s illness. The best wishes of everyone at CA and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time,” said Greenberg.
Former AFL star Brad Hardie said Martyn is “in for the fight of his life” when he made mention of the cricketer’s plight on Perth’s 6PR radio on Tuesday night.
“Damien Martyn, the champ from WA, fantastic batsman … unfortunately took ill on Boxing Day and currently is residing in a Queensland hospital and he is in for the fight of his life,” Hardie said.
“I’d like everybody to certainly have their best wishes and positive thoughts for Marto. God give him strength.
