Gold and silver futures opened the new year on a strong note on Friday, driven by firm global cues as investors moved towards safe-haven assets amid expectations of lower US interest rates.On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for February delivery rose Rs 948, or 0.7%, to Rs 1,36,752 per 10 grams, with a turnover of 15,639 lots. The contract had settled at Rs 1,35,804 per 10 grams on Thursday, up Rs 357, or 0.3%, from Wednesday’s close of Rs 1,35,447.MCX operated only during the day session on Thursday and remained closed in the evening due to the New Year holiday.Silver futures also saw sharp gains, with the March contract jumping Rs 7,107, or 3.01%, to Rs 2,42,980 per kg across 13,397 lots.
Silver had settled at Rs 2,35,873 per kg on Thursday, compared with Rs 2,35,701 per kg in the previous session.In overseas markets, Comex gold futures began 2026 on a firm footing, with the February contract rising $46.10, or 1.06%, to $4,387.20 per ounce. The metal had ended the final trading session of 2025 down 1% at $4,341.10 per ounce.Comex silver futures for March delivery climbed $2.4, or 3.4%, to $73 per ounce.
This followed a sharp fall of $7.32, or 9.39%, on Wednesday, when silver settled at $70.6 per ounce.
