How Australian cities will ring in the new year
There are plenty of free events around the country to see out 2025 and welcome 2026. See what's happening in your city.
There's plenty happening in each capital city on New Year's Eve if you are planning on staying up.
Each city will host a free fireworks show with live entertainment.

Adelaide
There'll be two fireworks displays on at Elder Park tonight.(ABC News: Lincoln Rothall)
The city of Adelaide will be putting on two fireworks displays on New Year's Eve.
The festivities, including live entertainment and a kids' zone will be on the Riverbank at Elder Park.
The event starts at 5pm with fireworks at 9pm and midnight.
Brisbane
For the first time, the fireworks show in Brisbane will feature simultaneous pyrotechnics across four precincts.
The displays will happen at Queen's Wharf, Howard Smith Wharves, Riverside Centre and South Bank at 7:45pm and midnight.
Canberra
In the nation's capital, a New Year's Eve celebration will happen on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.
The free community event will include two fireworks shows, one at 9pm and one at midnight.
There will be hubs to view the fireworks at Ron Terrace, Wendouree Drive, Ferry Gate and Jon Dunmore Lang Place.
Each hub will have food and local DJs.
Darwin
At the Darwin waterfront, entertainment will kick off from 3pm.
There will be picnics allowed and food trucks available but no alcohol.
Fireworks displays will happen at 9pm and midnight.
Hobart
Biodegradable fireworks will launch from two barges on the River Derwent at 9:30pm and midnight, with vantage points along the shoreline.
The Franklin Wharf area is buzzing this time of year, with the Sydney to Hobart race village and Taste of Summer festival given front row seats to the fireworks.
For those with accessibility needs, there is limited viewing space available next to Elizabeth Street Pier.
Revellers looking to end the year on a high can visit the car-free Regatta Grounds overlooking Macquarie Point.
The City of Hobart says the displays will also be visible from the more distant Mount Nelson, Queens Domain and the Kunanyi/Mt Wellington summit.
Melbourne

Melbourne's sky will light up twice on New Year's Eve, at 9:30pm and midnight.
There are four free family-friendly celebration zones at Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Kings Domain and Treasury Gardens.
There will food available and DJs at each.
Perth

In Perth, there will be fireworks shows at 8:30pm and midnight.
They can be viewed from Elizabeth Quay, Barrack Square and Supreme Court Gardens.
Sydney

In addition to the planned fireworks, the City of Sydney will hold a moment of reflection on the tragic Bondi attack.
At 11pm, the Sydney Harbour Bridge will glow white and the pylons will display the word Peace.
Viewers will be encouraged to shine their phone torches across the harbour as a symbol of solidarity with the Jewish community and everyone affected.
There will be fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.
The displays will be launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.
There will be ramped-up security.
If you can't get to your local fireworks event in person, you can still watch a fireworks show from the comfort of your couch.
You can follow the ABC's broadcast of the Sydney Harbour fireworks on ABC TV and iview from 8:45pm AEDT.
The NYE 2024 concert will also be broadcast across ABC's social media accounts on YouTube, Facebook and TikTok from 9:10pm.
