I stayed in three Dubai hotels that cost less than $200 a night – and loved them
Opulence and extravagance are in the emirate’s DNA, but not all the city’s hotels are dipped in gold. Here are my choices.

Dubai’s calendar year is often punctuated by hotel openings that make headlines. Many defy luxury conventions, each new resort a one-up on the last. Opulence and extravagance are in the emirate’s DNA, but not all of the city’s hotels are dipped in gold.
Cast your net wider and you’ll find an array of affordable or boutique options, some with luxury-level facilities like gyms, pools and breakfast buffet spreads. Here’s my pick of the best hotels in Dubai under $200.

This affordable, urban-inspired spin-off from luxury hotel group Jumeirah is so good, I pay to stay three extra nights. The 28-square-metre Popular Rooms are stylish and spacious with a New York loft-style vibe, black SMEG fridges, an open wardrobe and glossy white en suites with luxe amenities. Guests have access to a rooftop pool and Native Gym on level four, which is fitted out with modern equipment, an outdoor training zone and padel courts.
The vibe is young, with a hive of people working at a hot desk station in the lobby each day and an enviable breakfast served downstairs at Social Company. On-site you’ll find rooftop pan-Asian restaurant Lah Lah, while Bib Gourmand-rated Japanese restaurant Kinoya is just a one-minute stroll into The Onyx Tower next door. Its location within the suburban The Greens area is a bit dull, but it’s quite central and only a short Careem ride (Dubai’s app-based car and taxi service) to Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and Mall of the Emirates. The hotel offers a late 2pm check-out. Besides the overzealous AC, it’s hard to fault this hotel.

This is a solid option that’s close to the airport_._ Part of Design Hotels (the only UAE hotel member), this 15-storey stay features comfortable rooms and minimalist interiors that abstractly hint to Dubai’s traditional dhow boats. Popular with locals and business travellers, the stark white building sits minutes from the metro line in Al Jaddaf, albeit opposite a construction site, which is within easy reach of The Dubai Mall, Dubai World Trade Centre and Dubai Festival City.
My 24-square-metre Ideal King Room has a king-sized bed, an ensuite with basic amenities, a floor-to-ceiling window, an open wardrobe, a small built-in bench-lounge and a desk. The interiors are not particularly remarkable, but the room is practical and functional. On the rooftop is a pool and a decent-sized gym, while the hotel’s only restaurant, Long Hill Brasserie, serves up a good local breakfast spread including hummus, flatbread and eggs, and offers 24-hour room service (although this is a dry hotel, so you won’t find alcohol on the menu). Nearby are affordable spas or the highly rated Yemeni restaurant Mandi Man.
