'Irate' Jaylen Brown says refs were 'terrible' during Celtics loss to Spurs
Boston's star didn't hold back about his anger toward the officiating crew in Saturday's defeat.
BOSTON – Celtics star Jaylen Brown blasted the officiating crew Saturday night after his team’s 100-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, calling out referee Curtis Blair by name.
“Every time we play a good team, the inconsistency is crazy,” Brown said. “I’ll take the f—— fine. Curtis (Blair), those dudes was terrible tonight. I don’t care. They can fine me whatever they want. But it’s crazy. Every time we play a good team, it’s the same b—s—.”
For the second time all season, Brown did not draw any free throws. He entered the night averaging 7.4 per game. As a team, the Celtics only went to the line four times against San Antonio, while the Spurs took 20 free throws.
“I feel like, honestly, they just got away with a lot,” Brown said. “And I’m tired of the inconsistency. I’ll accept the fine at this point. I thought it was some b—s— tonight. I think they’re a good defensive team, but they ain’t that damn good. I hope somebody can just pull up the clips because it’s the same s— every time we play a good team. It’s like they refuse to make a call (favoring the Celtics). Then call touch fouls on the other end. That’s just extremely frustrating, bro. Like, we play hard. We were outplaying our expectations. We compete hard on the defensive end. Then they reward the other team with touch fouls. Then we go down there, and guys are allowed to get away with – I hope, just somebody please pull it up. “
Brown’s dissatisfaction with NBA referees has been a running theme this season. He has criticized the officials several times after games, but his complaints reached a new level of intensity Saturday.
“I’m irate at how they officiated the game today,” Brown said. “If we can’t get to the free-throw line and teams are allowed to be physical and bump us off our spots, etc., then it’s hard to win games like that. We shot four free throws tonight and lost the game by four. Not to say that’s the whole game, the whole story. We gotta be better in spots. I gotta be better in spots. But goddamn. I’m driving to the basket. I’m physical. I don’t flop. I don’t shy away from contact. I go up strong. I’m athletic. And nothing. Zero free throws tonight. The inconsistency is f—— crazy. Give me the fine.”
Brown reiterated his anger on X after the game, welcoming a fine for his venting session.
The Celtics rank last in the NBA in free-throw rate, but that is at least partially due to how rarely they shoot near the basket. They also rank last in field-goal attempts per game at the rim. Brown, who averages more drives per game than anybody except Deni Avdija and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, ranks 16th in the league in free throws per game.
“I don’t know what’s going on,” Brown said. “I got my conspiracies or whatever, but I don’t know what’s going on. But it seems like every time we play a good team, it’s the same s—.”
