It's difficult to decide what symbolizes a greater nadir for the Jewish state: the approval of capital punishment for terrorists in a first round of voting in the Knesset, or the baklava party in Israel's parliament and the exchange of hostage pins, which symbolized hope and responsibility for human life, for pins shaped like the hangman's noose that Rabbi Meir Kahane brandished at the Knesset in the 1980s before he was legally ousted from it. These two events together paint a single picture: the abandonment of the sanctity of life in favor of violent populism.
