Jean Smart Implores “Let’s All Do the Right Thing” After Golden Globes Win
The ‘Hacks’ star won her second straight award for best TV comedy actress for her role in the HBO Max series.
Jean Smart won her second straight Golden Globe for best female actor in a TV comedy, and during her speech she asked people to “do the right thing.”
“There’s so much that could be said tonight. I said my rant on the red carpet, so I won’t do it here,” the Hacks star said on stage. “Let’s all do the right thing. I think everybody in their hearts knows what the right thing is to do, so let’s do the right thing.”
Smart said in a red carpet interview (via TV Insider) that “Everything is kind of overshadowed with everything going on in this country. … I feel like we’re kind of at a turning point in this country, and I hope people can keep their heads because that’s actually, really the hardest thing, I think, is to keep our heads. It’s going to take a lot of courage and concerns, but I think that’s important.”
Several other Globes attendees made direct statements about the killing of Renee Good by a federal agent Wednesday in Minneapolis: Mark Ruffalo wore a “Be Good” pin and sharply criticized the Trump administration in red carpet interviews. Comedian Wanda Sykes wore a pin reading “ICE Out.”
Smart added, “I know that there are people who find it annoying when actors take opportunities like this to talk about social and political things, but I’m not here right now speaking as an actor. I’m here speaking as a citizen and a mom, and I hope people understand that.”
Smart has won three Golden Globes for her role as Deborah Vance on HBO Max’s Hacks, with prior wins in 2022 and 2025. “What can I say — I’m a greedy bitch,” Smart joked in accepting the award. “I’m one of luckiest people in not this room, but the entire business. … I’m just surrounded by so much support.”
