Real Madrid expect forward Kylian Mbappe to miss Sunday’s La Liga fixture against Real Betis due to a knee injury.
Madrid confirmed on Wednesday that Mbappe, 27, had suffered a sprain to his left knee, and the injury leaves him as a doubt to face Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final.
The France international underwent tests on Wednesday, having experienced discomfort in his knee for some time.
Madrid return to action following the winter break on Sunday, before facing Atletico in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals in Saudi Arabia on January 8. The final takes place on January 11.
Mbappe has scored 29 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions this season and has missed just one match across the entirety of the campaign — December’s Champions League loss to Manchester City, in which he was an unused substitute.
During Madrid’s final game of 2025 Mbappe equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for number of goals for the Spanish club in a calendar year, scoring his 59th of 2025 in the win against Sevilla.
Madrid are already without defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold, Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal due to injury.
Xabi Alonso’s side are second in La Liga after 18 games, four points behind leaders Barcelona.
