A man in his thirties was found dead on a residential street in freezing temperatures and his death is being treated as unexplained.
A passerby made the grim discovery outside a house in Guildford, Surrey, and the local police force has referred itself to the watchdog after having contact with the man before his death.
Police were called to Hazel Avenue at around 7:15am on Friday morning to reports of a dead body.
Officers believe they have since identified the man, though the formal identification process is yet to complete, and have informed his next of kin.
Forensic teams visited the scene to investigate the circumstances of his death.
The whole street, which has a community centre, nursery school and a playpark, was cordoned off for the probe but reopened on Friday afternoon.
After the initial investigation, Surrey Police said the death was being treated as unexplained, but that they did not believe the circumstances were suspicious.
The force referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) because it had had contact with the man before he died, as is mandatory.

Police thanks the public for their patience and understanding, and said they did not require any further help with information.
They also reassured residents there was no wider risk.
