A gunman remains on the run after a man was shot dead in what police described as a 'targeted' attack in Sydney's west.
Police were called to a unit complex in Newman Street in Merrylands about 6.40am on Saturday after a neighbour found Bosco Josic, 44, inside his apartment suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
He was unable to be revived.
Homicide detectives spent the day examining the crime scene and doorknocking residents.
Chief Inspector Tim Calman revealed that the man was known to police for 'only a minor matter' but had no links to organised crime.
'It appears at this stage it was not a random attack ... it would look as if it was actually targeted,' he said.
'He was shot to the chest. It's only a single shot.
'The incident is all contained within the unit.'

A manhunt is now underway to track down the gunman. Police are yet to reveal a description.
'At this stage we have no firm indication of who we are looking for, suffice to say it is a male,' Chief Inspector Calman said.
Shocked neighbours reported hearing yelling from the apartment earlier in the morning.
They described him as a nice man.
'We didn't see no one leave the place, we just heard yelling, and then we didn't see anything after it,' one man told Ten News.
'I was the best man at his wedding quite a long time ago but haven't seen him for a few years. He has had a hard life.
Another added: 'You're not expecting that. Not at all.
The manhunt for Mr Josic's killer continues
'You expect fights and the police to come because they've come but nothing like this.'
The police investigation continues.
