Newcastle's Tino Livramento out with suspected hamstring problem, Eddie Howe says
The head coach said he thinks Jacob Murphy will be "OK" for Tuesday's match against Manchester City after being out of Saturday's squad.
Eddie Howe has lamented another injury “blow” to Newcastle United’s backline, with Tino Livramento set for another spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring problem.
The full-back was forced off in the 59th minute of the 7-6 penalty-shootout victory over AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup third round at St James’ Park on Saturday. After full-time, the scoreline was 2-2 and then 3-3 after extra-time, but Newcastle were victorious following penalties.
Howe’s side have a relentless schedule, hosting Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday before travelling to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League next Sunday. Newcastle also played 13 minutes of additional time during their last-gasp 4-3 victory over Leeds United last Wednesday.
Dan Burn, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth are already sidelined, with Livramento set to join them on the treatment table.
“It looks like a hamstring problem, which is always a worry when it’s a muscular problem,” Howe told reporters afterwards. “Absolutely devastated for him because he’s worked so hard to come back and looked in really good physical shape.
“I’m not too sure on any other details other than that, but it’s going to be a blow. He’s obviously going to be out for a period of time.”
Jacob Murphy, meanwhile, was left out of the squad for the Bournemouth win after feeling a tightness in his hamstring, but Howe expects him to be available for Manchester City.
“More precautionary,” Howe said of Murphy. “He’s just been feeling a hamstring. We think he’ll be OK for Tuesday night, but I think it was the right call just to make sure there’s no damage.”
Howe previously described Newcastle as taking a “watching brief” in the transfer market this month and has backed the club’s stance. The head coach has reiterated his desire to have enough players available to compete on all four fronts, however.
“I think the club are taking the right stance,” Howe said on the transfer market. “So far, we’ll assess it on a day-by-day basis.
“Obviously, the one area we didn’t want to lose players is defensively. We’ve lost two in very quick succession. So, let’s see. We’ll discuss things. Well, we do discuss things on a daily basis and try and make the right decisions.
“I think we need enough players to play the games. So when we need enough cover, because today unfortunately we’ve put a couple of the players at risk just with extra-time, and that’s (for) every player on the pitch, then the injury risk goes higher the more you’re playing. So we’d love to have them enough bodies to lessen that risk, but at the moment we don’t have the options.
“We’ve got to make the right decision and we’ll have intense and detailed discussions to try and make sure we come to the right conclusions.”
