Nuno Espirito Santo apologises to West Ham fans after ‘embarrassing’ performance against Wolves
West Ham are winless in their last nine league games for the first time since 2011.
Nuno Espirito Santo has apologised to West Ham United supporters following the club’s “embarrassing” 3-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Goals from Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-Chan and Mateus Mane gave Wolves their first league win of the season and handed West Ham their 12th defeat.
For the first time since 2011, West Ham are winless in their last nine league games. Nuno’s side remain in the relegation zone in 18th place and are four points from safety.
Two of Wolves’ three victories in all competitions have come against West Ham this season (the previous being in the Carabao Cup in August), while their last league win was against Leicester City in April 2025. Nuno, who managed Wolves between 2017 and 2021, has demanded improvement ahead of Tuesday’s encounter with fellow relegation contenders Nottingham Forest.
“I have to apologise to the fans,” the head coach said in his post-match press conference. “I have to apologise. Those that travelled today, (our performance) was embarrassing. There’s not much I can say other than we are sorry. We are sorry because what we showed today was not good enough.
“Personally, I didn’t expect this performance. We have recently been playing good, not achieving results, but always being in the game. Today was the worst performance that we had.”
Since succeeding Graham Potter in late September, Nuno has only overseen two wins (against Newcastle United and Burnley) in 15 league games. The Portuguese was reluctant to discuss whether he is under pressure.
“I think it’s not about my future, it’s about how can we get out of this situation,” Nuno added. “How can we improve and get the results that will make us climb the table? This is what we are concerned about. Now is the moment to reflect, to think, to speak among ourselves and see if we are strong enough to solve it. Of course (we have the desire and determination), of course we have. But we need to change many things. It’s not about words, today is a tough day for everybody.
“We needed much more from our players. The way we started and the way we performed was very poor. It was embarrassing. I don’t recall a day that I’ve felt so bad on a football pitch like today.”
