Packers claim former Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs: Source

The Packers won’t have star defensive end Micah Parsons for the playoffs, but they’ll have his good friend and former Dallas Cowboys teammate Trevon Diggs. The Packers claimed Diggs off waivers on Wednesday, according to a league source, after the Cowboys released him on Tuesday.
Shortly after news broke of Diggs’ signing, Parsons posted “We’re back” on X. The veteran cornerback may not be the same player that was a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and a Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2022, but he at least adds much-needed depth to a room that just lost Kamal Hadden to a season-ending injury and Nate Hobbs for at least multiple weeks to a knee injury. If you needed an example of how dire the Packers’ cornerback situation is right now, former defensive back Bo Melton switched from wide receiver to cornerback during Wednesday’s practice.
Starters Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine haven’t exactly been stellar in recent weeks, either, but it seems far-fetched that Diggs would take snaps over them in the postseason. Diggs may see his first action with the Packers on Sunday in a relatively meaningless game against the Minnesota Vikings, who have already been eliminated from the postseason, while the Packers have secured the No. 7 seed. Head coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that some starters won’t play against the Vikings. The Packers also signed cornerbacks Shemar Bartholomew and Jaylin Simpson from the practice squad to the active roster, an indication Green Bay might be playing reserves in place of Nixon and Valentine ahead of a wild-card round trip to Chicago or Philadelphia.
Diggs has only played in eight games this season because of a concussion and right knee injuries, but he’s played in the Cowboys’ last two games against the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Chargers. According to Pro Football Focus, opposing quarterbacks have a perfect 158.3 passer rating when targeting Diggs this season (20 targets and 16 completions for 286 yards and three touchdowns). Diggs also has no interceptions or pass breakups this season. His lone tackle for loss came against the Packers with about 30 seconds left in overtime of their 40-40 tie at Dallas in Week 4.
According to NFL Network, the Packers owe Diggs $472,222 for his Week 18 game check. He was under contract through 2028 with the Cowboys on a five-year deal worth an average of $19.4 million annually, according to Over The Cap, so the Packers will have the option to release him and potentially re-sign him as a free agent after this season if they don’t want to pay him what that mammoth extension dictates.
