They are not usually associated with the UK but the latest data shows there were more than 300 earthquakes across Britain and Northern Ireland this year.
Among the most active regions were Perthshire and the western Highlands, southern parts of Wales, plus Yorkshire and Lancashire, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS).
The two largest onshore earthquakes happened hours apart on October 20 near Loch Lyon in Perthshire, when a 3.7-magnitude tremor was followed by one of magnitude 3.6.

One local resident described feeling a ‘subway under my house’.
After the event, BGS received 198 ‘felt reports’ from people describing their experience of the quake.
It said 34 of the earthquakes happened near Loch Lyon between October and December.
The data shows 309 quakes were recorded in the UK up to December 18.
BGS seismologist Brian Baptie said that while ‘major earthquakes of devastating magnitude are extremely unlikely’, the country ‘on average experienced an earthquake almost once a day this year’.
