Raiders' Maxx Crosby expected to need knee surgery after being placed on IR: Source
The Raiders announced that they were placing the five-time Pro Bowler on injured reserve Saturday, ending his season with two games to go.
Las Vegas Raiders star pass rusher Maxx Crosby is expected to need knee surgery this offseason, a league source told The Athletic, after seeing his season come to an end on Saturday.
The Raiders announced they were placing the five-time Pro Bowler on injured reserve Saturday, ending his 2025 campaign with two games left on the schedule.
“After deliberate and thorough consultation with multiple top medical professionals, it became clear that this decision is in the best interest of both the franchise and the player,” the Raiders’ announcement on social media read. “Maxx is the ultimate warrior, and he has fought extremely hard to compete each week with his teammates since injuring his knee mid-season.”
Raiders coach Pete Carroll had already ruled Crosby out of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants, due to a lingering knee injury, and said it was possible Crosby would miss the team’s regular-season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. The veteran pass rusher left the team facility upon receiving the news on Friday.
“He didn’t want to take the news like that, and I didn’t want to take the news like that,” Carroll told reporters Friday. “… If we let him, he would have been out there, and he would not have hesitated, but he knows that he’s banged up. So he’s talking about, ‘I’d like to get out of here.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, get out of here.’ So, he took off.”
Crosby had missed just five games in his entire seven-year NFL career up until this weekend, with all five of those absences coming during the 2024 season.
He has been on the Raiders’ injury report with a knee injury since Week 12 this season, but had yet to miss a game. The 28-year-old tallied 10 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception in 15 games and was named to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time earlier this week. His absence comes ahead of a Week 17 game against the Giants that will go a long way to determining which franchise will land the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Giants and Raiders are both 2-13, tied for the worst record in the NFL.
“Yeah, I don’t give a s— about the pick, to be honest,” Crosby said during a Raiders locker room media session Tuesday. “I don’t play for that. That’s not my job. My job is to be the best defensive end in the world. That’s what I focus on every day. Being a great leader, being an influence. Being that guy on a consistent basis for my team.”
