GORAKHPUR: Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amrendra Nishad narrowly escaped after his cousin allegedly tried to shoot him in UP's Gorakhpur on Tuesday.The incident occurred around 2.30 pm at Amrendra Nishad’s residence while he was standing at his doorstep.Amrendra Nishad, son of the late Jamuna Nishad, a former minister during the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) regime, told police that his cousin, Ravindra Nishad, fired at him. The bullet narrowly missed his chest.According to the FIR, Ravindra Nishad also threatened Amrendra, warning that he might not be so lucky next time. Police have registered a case under sections 109 (attempt to murder) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and have taken the accused into custody.
Investigations are ongoing.Amrendra Nishad had contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from the Pipraich constituency on the SP ticket but lost to BJP’s Mahendra Pal Singh by 65,357 votes.In a related incident earlier this month, a teacher at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was fatally shot in the head. The university’s Proctor, Professor Mohd. Wasim Ali, confirmed that Rao Danish Ali of the ABK School died after being shot by two unidentified assailants. Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon said the investigation is ongoing, and the search for the attackers has begun.
