Stock Selling Picks Up Before the Close

With under an hour left of 2025 trading, stock market selling was accelerating.

The market benchmark’s Wednesday decline accelerated to 0.6% starting at around 2 p.m. ET. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.6%. The Dow was down 250 points, or 0.5%.

Only 39 stocks in the S&P 500 were set to rise on the day. The index’s gains for the year were down to 16.6%. The Nasdaq cut its gain this year to just under 20.6%. The Dow is sitting on a 13% gain. Depending on how you round, this latest slide has the potential to cut into the S&P and Nasdaq's gains for the year.
