Epic Games Store's daily giveaways continue through the rest of the year

An 'overwhelmingly positive' Pokémon-like is free on the Epic Games Store today

The Epic Games Store's latest free mystery game has been revealed. Until 11 a.m. EST on Dec. 28, Casette Beasts will be available to claim for free from the Epic Games Store.

Cassette Beasts, first released in 2023, is a Pokémon-like creature-collecting RPG that offers a legitimately excellent alternative to Game Freak's totemic series, and a throwback to the top-down era (before Pokémon pivoted to the 3D games that define the series today). On Steam, Cassette Beasts user reviews are "overwhemlingly positive," matching critical response too. From Polygon's Cassette Beasts review: "Cassette Beasts’ charm is undeniable. This is a game aimed squarely at players who were kids when Red and Blue came out, who will laugh at Team Rocket being replaced with a group of evil landlords who look like vampires and talk about preying on the poor."

Typically, we know what game Epic is giving away a week in advance. However, during the holiday season, Epic literally wraps the game in mystery; the thumbnails on the Epic Games Store just show an image of a wrapped holiday present (complete with a bow on top). In 2024, the Epic Games Store gave away more than a dozen games in the two weeks leading into the new year, many of which were terrific, including Dredge, Control, and Sifu.

If you want to pick up the free game from Epic, all you need to do is log in to the Epic Games Store and claim it. The free mystery games are free for 24 hours, and reset each day at 11 a.m. EST, when the next mystery game will be revealed.
