Will Packers rest starters against Vikings with playoff seed already determined?
The Packers' recent run of injuries might convince coach Matt LaFleur to err on the side of caution with Love.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers have one relatively meaningless game remaining before hitting the road for the playoffs.
They have already secured the No. 7 seed, and their final regular-season opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, has already been eliminated. The Packers suffered another handful of injuries Saturday night in a 41-24 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, so might head coach Matt LaFleur rest key players in Minneapolis this coming weekend?
“I would say we’ve had some early discussions in regards to what route we’re going to do, and I’ll be able to update you guys later in the week,” LaFleur said Sunday. “But despite what has been reported potentially, nothing’s been decided.”
LaFleur has a couple of instances from recent years to help inform his decision. In the 2021 regular-season finale, he rested important players for the second half in Detroit with the No. 1 seed already clinched. The Packers lost that game 37-30, and the offense and special teams then cost them a divisional-round game at home against the San Francisco 49ers. Then there was last season’s regular-season finale against the Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field, when the Packers were already locked into a road wild-card game and lost wide receiver Christian Watson to a torn ACL and quarterback Jordan Love temporarily to an elbow injury.
“I think you’re leaning on past experiences and certainly it was a tough lesson a year ago in regards to what we lost going into the wild-card round, but yeah, absolutely, you lean into those and then kinda the state of the team as well,” LaFleur said. “I think there’s a lot of variables that get thrown into play. I know a lot of people have a difference of opinions on what is the best route, and ultimately we’ve got to make what the best decision is for us.”
Before LaFleur decides whether to play his starting quarterback, Love must first clear concussion protocol. He suffered his first documented concussion in the NFL midway through the second quarter of the Week 16 loss to the Bears and missed Saturday’s game against the Ravens while still in protocol. LaFleur said Love will have a chance to clear protocol at some point this week, but that opportunity wouldn’t come Sunday.
If both Love and backup quarterback Malik Willis are healthy, LaFleur left no doubt as to who will start when asked if Willis gives the Packers a better chance to win.
“I want to pump the brakes on all that stuff,” LaFleur said. “I think Jordan Love is playing some pretty high-level football, and it’s great that we feel the same about Malik in his ability to go in there. I thought he’s had two really back-to-back outstanding performances, so we’re in a good spot with that position. Certainly have a lot of confidence in both of those guys, but it’s clear that Jordan is our franchise quarterback, and when he is healthy, he’s going to be our starter. So just want to squash all that.”
Willis has undoubtedly excelled in fill-in duty over the last two seasons and set himself up for a hefty payday in free agency, but Love was third in NFL MVP odds entering the Packers’ Week 15 game in Denver and lit up the Broncos in the first half before the team’s second-half collapse and his ensuing concussion in Chicago.
